LORICARIIDAE

Often referred to as a "cleaner," the ancistrus is a well-known species in the aquarium world. What is often mistakenly described as Ancistrus dolichopterus is not the only option for your aquarium. In this subcategory, I aim to explain my methods for each species in as much detail as possible, along with any findings I have gathered.

Vaak aangeduid als een "schoonmaker" is de ancistrus een bekende vis binnen de aquariumwereld. Wat vaak onterecht wordt beschreven als de Ancistrus dolichopterus, is echter niet de enige optie voor uw aquarium.  Binnen deze subcategorie probeer ik mijn methodes zo gedetailleerd mogelijk uit te leggen voor elke soort, samen met mijn bevindingen.

ANCISTRUS

The Ancistrus is widely regarded as one of the foundational “clean-up” fish in the aquarium. Commonly known as an algae eater, it is especially efficient in this role when young. As it matures, however, it often produces more waste than it actually removes. Fortunately, the value of Ancistrus extends far beyond this single function. With the wide range of variants available in the hobby — from selectively bred color strains to wild types — this species also contributes significantly to the visual appeal of the aquarium. While some variants are easier to breed than others, the breeding reports presented here provide valuable insights into this fascinating genus. They are also intended to inspire others to start their own breeding projects. For many years, the various Ancistrus variants have been at the core of my hobby and breeding focus.

De Ancistrus wordt door velen beschouwd als de basisopruimer van het aquarium. Deze zogenaamde “algeneter” staat erom bekend vooral als jonge vis efficiënt te werk te gaan. Naarmate hij volwassen wordt, produceert hij echter vaak meer afval dan hij daadwerkelijk opruimt. Gelukkig reikt de waarde van de Ancistrus verder dan enkel deze functie. Met de vele varianten die binnen de hobby beschikbaar zijn — zowel kleurkweken als wildtypes — draagt deze soort ook sterk bij aan het visuele aspect van het aquarium. Hoewel sommige varianten eenvoudiger te kweken zijn dan andere, bieden de kweekverslagen die hier worden besproken waardevolle inzichten in dit fascinerende genus. Ze vormen bovendien een stimulans om zelf een kweekproject op te starten. De verschillende Ancistrus-varianten vormen al jarenlang het centrale punt binnen mijn hobby en kweekactiviteiten.
